Massillon is in Northeast Ohio, along the Tuscarawas River in Stark County. Founded as a village in 1843 and became a city in 1868 when it reached the population of 5,000 and today it is home to over 32,000 residents. During the 1890s, football became a sport for many of the factory workers and the high school team doubled as a professional football team. The passion consumed the community then and still does today. Massillon has raised more than two dozen professional football players like Paul Brown who was both the co-founder and first coach of the Cleveland Browns, a team named after him, and later played a role in founding the Cincinnati Bengals. The downtown is filled with family-owned businesses and every summer there is a concert series at the Duncan Plaza for families to gather. The residents also gather every Friday night to cheer on the Massillon football team in the Fall.
