When Water-Fire-Storm Damage Happens in Waupaca, We’re Ready

There is a city, a town and a county all named Waupaca.  Both the city and the town are in Waupaca County, and the city is mostly within the town.  What then is the difference between a city and a town?  While the answer can be complex, cities tend to be more densely populated and urbanized, while towns tend to be more rural in nature.  Both can have boundaries that span multiple counties.  But the most significant distinction is that cities are incorporated and towns are unincorporated.  “Unincorporated communities are not officially considered to be municipal areas of their own accord.  They often act as a part of a larger municipality, such as a county or city.” For example, it is not uncommon for a town to not have a police force.  Instead, they will contract for police services from a county’s sheriff’s office.  In the case of Waupaca, the city is politically independent of the town and is located mostly within the town’s borders about 30 minutes west of New London.  Like most of the Fox Valley and surrounding areas in northern Wisconsin, Waupaca can trace its roots back to the native Americans.  Native American mound builders lived in the area prior to European settlement.  Several pre-Columbian cultures in North America were collectively known as Mound Builders, characterized by their practice of burying their dead in large mounds.

Today visitors are drawn to Waupaca for its historic district and the 22 interconnected spring fed lakes.  The lakes provide abundant opportunities for recreation and water sports while the downtown historical district offers a glimpse in to the past.  Waupaca boasts 43 properties that are part of the state and national register of historic places, including the 1868 Hansen wagon shop, the 1881 Jensen meat market and the 1893 Queen-Anne style Waupaca County national bank.  To learn more visit: https://www.cityofwaupaca.org/our-community/explore-main-street-waupaca/.

"Good job by all"

"I was very stressed and unsure about the next steps when SERVPRO arrived.  My mind was quickly set at ease when C.J. said, 'This is a once-in-a-lifetime event for you, but it's just another Tuesday at SERVPRO.  Let's talk about your priorities.' "

“SERVPRO – The cavalry arrived on a recent Sunday afternoon to our house in the form of four bright green SERVPRO trucks with Appleton, Wis., painted on the sides.  When the SERVPRO Operations manger first called us to schedule an appointment after the storm, I noticed a strange 920 area code.  After making the appointment, I thought I should do a bit of work to make sure it wasn’t some sort of scam.  As the Dallas Morning News Watchdog says, “It’s good to be overly careful.”

I called the local SERVPRO franchisee and found out that the company brought in over 1,000 folks from around the country to help Texans get their homes back in shape.  A woman on the crew told me that this was her first time to help during a disaster and that she is proud to be helping people recover.

I am thrilled there are people like her and the rest of the team.  I just wanted to say thank you and recognize all those who traveled far to help.

I’m sure there are others from around the country, and this “Three Cheers” is for all who have come here to help."
