Poygan is a very small town in the northwest corner of Winnebago County along the shores of Poygan Lake about 15 minutes from Oshkosh. The town had 742 residents back in 1900 and that number remained relatively steady for many years, with 877 in 1996. In 2002 it went up to just 1093.
Just like the rest of the Fox Valley and surrounding areas, Poygan can trace its history back to Native Americans. Early European settlers came to the area in 1851, with a post office being established in 1852. By 1908 there were six schoolhouses, a church, and a town hall. It wasn’t until the 1920’s that roads were converted to gravel roads. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that those same roads were finally paved bringing with them modern conveniences like electricity and running water. Historically Poygan consisted of mostly summer cabins. But a public sewer system brought in during the 1990’s has allowed even more development. Today Poygan is home to not only vacationers, but retirees and commuters alike.
The original church, a catholic church, St Thomas Aquinas was built in 1860. While no longer in use, the church still stands today and is sometimes used for special event.
“Poygan has an abundance of natural resources. The Town natural resource amenities include Lake Poygan and the Deppe Marsh State Wildlife Area, which is located in the southwest corner of the Town and harbors many species of wildlife. Additionally, the Town of Poygan is located within the Glacial Habitat Restoration Area, which is a regional wildlife habitat protection area.” For more on the Deppe Marsh visit: Deppe Wildlife Area | | Wisconsin DNR

What our Poygan
customers are saying
"Good job by all"
"I was very stressed and unsure about the next steps when SERVPRO arrived. My mind was quickly set at ease when C.J. said, 'This is a once-in-a-lifetime event for you, but it's just another Tuesday at SERVPRO. Let's talk about your priorities.' "
From the "Three Cheers" Section of the Dallas Morning News
“SERVPRO – The cavalry arrived on a recent Sunday afternoon to our house in the form of four bright green SERVPRO trucks with Appleton, Wis., painted on the sides. When the SERVPRO Operations manger first called us to schedule an appointment after the storm, I noticed a strange 920 area code. After making the appointment, I thought I should do a bit of work to make sure it wasn’t some sort of scam. As the Dallas Morning News Watchdog says, “It’s good to be overly careful.”
I called the local SERVPRO franchisee and found out that the company brought in over 1,000 folks from around the country to help Texans get their homes back in shape. A woman on the crew told me that this was her first time to help during a disaster and that she is proud to be helping people recover.
I am thrilled there are people like her and the rest of the team. I just wanted to say thank you and recognize all those who traveled far to help.
I’m sure there are others from around the country, and this “Three Cheers” is for all who have come here to help."
"Many many thanks for your help this morning with the furniture, having the guys help meant so much. That was so considerate of you and them to give us a helping hand. THANKS AGAIN."
"Rhonda was great -- thank you!"
"Nobody can beat the turnaround time."
