The area in Virginia Beach known as Oceana is home to Naval Air Station Oceana, which is a United States Naval Air Station. It is located on the Atlantic Coast, five miles south of the downtown resort of Virginia Beach. The base is under the jurisdiction of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic and is the headquarters of Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic and Carrier Air Wings 1, 3, 7 and 8. The primary mission of NAS Oceana is to train and deploy the Navy’s Atlantic Fleet strike fighter squadrons. NAS Oceana was constructed in 1941 and officially commissioned in 1943. It has been home to carrier-based aircraft since the beginning, it is home to 14 deployable Strike Fighter squadrons, it is the sole East Coast Master Jet Base. NAS Oceana has grown to become one of the largest and most advanced air stations in the world, it is encompassing 6,820 acres. It is no surprise that 10,500 service members call NAS Oceana home. Along with their family members (approximately 10,000) and 4,500 Civilian employees call Oceana home. In 1976 NAS Oceana held their first Air Show and since then it has been a mainstay late summer event for 46 years.
