Discovering Old Town, ME
Located in Penobscot County and surrounded by the Penobscot and Stillwater Rivers, Old Town offers small-city charm, a strong sense of history, and a close connection to Maine’s natural beauty. The City of Old Town blends a traditional downtown with riverside homes, forested trails, and a hardworking community spirit.
Old Town’s roots trace back to lumber mills, canoe manufacturing, and its long relationship with the nearby Penobscot Nation. The combination of older mill-era buildings and scenic riverbanks gives the city its signature look—and a few challenges for property owners. Flooding, aging structures, and seasonal storms can all create the need for expert restoration.
Neighboring areas like Orono (home of the University of Maine), Bradley, and Alton extend the local network of homes, shops, and businesses that rely on SERVPRO for cleanup and repair.
What Makes Old Town Special
Old Town’s riverside character defines its lifestyle. Residents enjoy outdoor activities like boating, kayaking, and fishing on the Penobscot River, while local businesses thrive in a community that values tradition and resilience. Many of the city’s properties—ranging from century-old homes to newer rentals and small commercial buildings—reflect its industrial past and natural setting.
Downtown Old Town features small shops and restaurants, while nearby nature trails and forests, including the Dwight B. Demeritt Forest and local recreation areas, offer year-round exploration. The area’s mix of architectural styles, climates, and construction ages means that both water and fire damage are common risks—especially during harsh Maine winters or rainy spring seasons.
Things to Do in Old Town, ME
Life in Old Town blends history and recreation. Visitors and locals often:
- Explore the Old Town Museum to learn about the city’s lumber and Native American heritage.
- Paddle the Stillwater and Penobscot Rivers for scenic outdoor fun.
- Enjoy the trails and wetlands that border town, perfect for hiking or snowshoeing.
- Head to nearby Downtown Orono for shopping, dining, and entertainment just minutes away.
These experiences highlight what makes Old Town vibrant—but they also reflect its environment: a community where river proximity, seasonal weather, and older construction mean staying prepared for property damage is essential.
Why Old Town’s Conditions Create Restoration Needs
Water & Storm Damage Risks
Old Town’s rivers and wetlands add beauty but also risk. Heavy rains, snowmelt, or ice dams can cause flooding, foundation leaks, or roof damage. Many historic and wood-frame homes have basements prone to seepage or sump-pump failure, making timely water damage restoration crucial to prevent mold and structural harm.
Fire & Smoke Hazards
Old Town’s older housing stock, commercial kitchens, and aging wiring increase fire risk. Winter heating systems and chimney use also contribute. When a fire occurs, fire damage restoration services are essential to remove smoke residues, repair structural damage, and restore air quality.
Mold & Moisture Concerns
In Maine’s damp climate, moisture trapped in basements, attics, or crawl spaces can quickly lead to mold growth. SERVPRO’s certified technicians use advanced remediation and drying methods to identify hidden moisture and restore healthy indoor environments.
Residential & Commercial Challenges
With its blend of family homes, student rentals, and small businesses, Old Town demands flexible solutions. A burst pipe in a rental unit, smoke damage in a restaurant, or storm damage to a warehouse all require fast, reliable restoration to minimize downtime and expense.

Fire Damage Restoration

Storm, Mold & Construction Services
Maine’s severe winters and unpredictable storms can cause roof leaks, wind damage, and water intrusion. SERVPRO offers storm-damage cleanup, roof tarping, and reconstruction support. If lingering moisture leads to mold, our technicians perform containment, removal, and sanitization.

What our Old Town
customers are saying
My 82 year old bedridden mothers sewer backed up and flooded her basement. We called SERVPRO 800 number and explained our dire situation. Late in the day and we where trying to figure out how to relocate mom. We received a call from Jon at SERVPRO of Bangor/Ellsworth and he said they were coming now, like in route, on the way. I thought it would take days to coordinate this clean up effort. Nope they dropped everything and are mobilized and will be on site within the hour. In disbelief I watched two trucks a bunch of guys and ton of equipment and they were on it. They work tirelessly and before we new it mom had a livable house, we never had to relocate. That day we were blessed with hero’s. Thanks to Bangor/Ellsworth SERVPRO. I will always recommend this company.
You guys are worth every word and penny of the service you provide. If you need a hero, call SERVPRO!
Your crew was everything and more. They are hard workers and do a great job. Our house hasn’t been this clean in 40 years. Thank you for responding quickly so we could get on with our lives!
Thanks for all your help getting the ball rolling on so many fronts, with all of the contractors and your crew. It's nice to know that there are people out there who take pride in their job and show up when people call, especially when they have emergencies. I'm going to tell everyone about you, so if anybody has problems they can call on weekends and not have to worry about people flaking out on emergency calls and not show up. Kudos to you and your top-notch crew!
Had to use the services of this company this past weekend. They had a timely response and the workers who came to resolve the issue were extremely pleasant. Hope not to have to use the service again but if we do, then this will be the company we call and will refer others to their services.
I want to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to the SERVPRO professionals that came to our rescue when we had a water issue in our basement. In particular, John Symonds was the best!! His prompt response was very welcoming and his knowledge and professionalism was evident. We initially thought the water had entered the basement though a window, but John quickly dismissed this theory when we discovered a floor drain that had backed up. This was a great relief to us. When we discovered the damage after being away for two weeks, we were very proactive and did some damage control by pulling up saturated rugs and flooring. John had great praise for us for doing this and mentioned this would help in the cleanup of the mess. He had equipment in our home very quickly and had us drying out in a record amount of time. We learned to trust him because of his honesty with us and professional demeanor. We were scheduled to go on vacation and could not cancel. We felt confident enough with John to give him a key to the house so he could have access to do his job. We don't do this normally, but felt comfortable enough with him to allow it.We can't say enough good about John and the company he works for. Great job!!!
I just wanted to thank you all for being so quick to respond to our water problem on Friday. We were all kind of in panic mode and didn’t really know where to start. I’m glad I thought to call SERVPRO because with your help, we were able to get the water out within a few hours. We may have lost some things, but without your promptness to our emergency, it could’ve been so much worse. So, thank you so much for sending Bud out right away. He showed up with a smile even with all the chaos I’m sure you were all dealing with from Thursday and Friday. Please let him know how appreciative we are for him showing up so quickly and getting the job done.
