What Is Deer Isle Like?

Tucked away off Maine’s eastern coast, Deer Isle sits on a rocky island in Hancock County, connected to the mainland by the scenic suspension span of the Deer Isle Bridge. The landscape here is classic coastal Maine—granite cliffs, salt-sprayed pines, historic wood-frame homes, and working lobster boats in the harbor. With a small, close-knit population, Deer Isle offers both quiet residential living and a vibrant artisan culture.

Homes here often reflect the island’s history—shingle-style cottages and wooden structures close to the shoreline. These give the area its charm but also present vulnerabilities when it comes to weather, water, storm damage, or fire.

What Makes Deer Isle Unique?

Deer Isle stands out for its blend of natural beauty, history, and craftsmanship. A key landmark is the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, an internationally recognized arts school that attracts creators from around the world. The town’s granite-quarrying past helped build major monuments across the U.S., and its fishing, boatbuilding, and craft traditions continue today.

The community blends working-coast resilience with artistic creativity, and that mix defines its character. However, the same coastal charm brings challenges: salt air, fog, high winds, and cold winters can wear on buildings and materials. SERVPRO’s restoration experience helps protect and preserve these unique island structures.

What Is There to Do in Deer Isle?

There’s plenty to explore in this distinctive town. Visitors and locals enjoy the scenic hiking trails and outdoor spaces listed on the Town of Deer Isle Recreation page. You can walk through the historic village center, watch lobstermen at work in the harbor, or browse local galleries and shops.

Nearby, Bridge End Park beneath the Deer Isle Bridge offers incredible views of Eggemoggin Reach. To the south, the village of Stonington, ME brings lively waterfront energy with artisan studios, restaurants, and working docks.

Whether you own a seasonal cottage, an art gallery, or a small inn, Deer Isle combines coastal charm with active living—and that means properties here must be ready for Maine’s changing weather.

Water Damage Restoration in Deer Isle, ME

Surrounded by ocean, Deer Isle faces unique water-related risks. Sea spray, tidal surges, melting snow, and heavy rain can all cause flooding or moisture intrusion. Older homes near the water often experience leaks, condensation, or foundation seepage. Coastal fog and humidity make drying difficult without professional equipment.

At SERVPRO, we respond quickly with water extraction, drying, dehumidification, and structural repair. Whether it’s a basement flood in a Deer Isle cottage or a burst pipe at a gallery in Stonington, we help protect what matters most and restore it fast.

Fire Damage Restoration

Fire risk is significant on the island because of its many older, wood-framed buildings. Wood-burning stoves, chimneys, and outdated wiring can quickly spark trouble. When fire strikes, damage extends beyond what’s visible—soot, odor, and smoke residue can linger.

SERVPRO’s fire damage restoration includes cleaning, smoke odor removal, and rebuilding damaged interiors or exteriors. Whether it’s a small kitchen fire or larger structural damage, we restore homes and businesses with minimal disruption—helping preserve Deer Isle’s historic character.

Storm Damage & Wind Events

Coastal storms and nor’easters bring heavy wind, rain, and ice. High gusts can tear off shingles, topple trees, and send debris through windows. Salt air accelerates corrosion, while snow and ice buildup threaten roofs and gutters.

When severe weather hits Deer Isle, Little Deer Isle, or Stonington, SERVPRO is ready. We board up windows, tarp roofs, remove fallen debris, and dry out interiors. If structural repairs are needed, our construction team provides full build-back services—so your property returns to normal faster.

Mold Remediation & Cleaning Services

Fog, humidity, and older construction create ideal conditions for mold growth. Crawlspaces, attics, and basements often harbor unseen moisture. SERVPRO’s mold remediation process includes inspection, containment, air filtration, and removal of affected materials.

We also offer comprehensive cleaning services for homeowners and businesses—deep cleaning, odor removal, and tenant turnover prep. Whether it’s a historic cottage or a waterfront inn, our trained professionals keep island properties safe, clean, and inviting.

What our Deer Isle
customers are saying

My 82 year old bedridden mothers sewer backed up and flooded her basement. We called SERVPRO 800 number and explained our dire situation. Late in the day and we where trying to figure out how to relocate mom. We received a call from Jon at SERVPRO of Bangor/Ellsworth and he said they were coming now, like in route, on the way. I thought it would take days to coordinate this clean up effort. Nope they dropped everything and are mobilized and will be on site within the hour. In disbelief I watched two trucks a bunch of guys and ton of equipment and they were on it. They work tirelessly and before we new it mom had a livable house, we never had to relocate. That day we were blessed with hero’s. Thanks to Bangor/Ellsworth SERVPRO. I will always recommend this company.

You guys are worth every word and penny of the service you provide. If you need a hero, call SERVPRO!

Thanks for all your help getting the ball rolling on so many fronts, with all of the contractors and your crew. It's nice to know that there are people out there who take pride in their job and show up when people call, especially when they have emergencies. I'm going to tell everyone about you, so  if anybody has problems they can call on weekends and not have to worry about people flaking out on emergency calls and not show up. Kudos to you and your top-notch crew!

Had to use the services of this company this past weekend. They had a timely response and the workers who came to resolve the issue were extremely pleasant. Hope not to have to use the service again but if we do, then this will be the company we call and will refer others to their services.

I want to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to the SERVPRO professionals that came to our rescue when we had a water issue in our basement. In particular, John Symonds was the best!! His prompt response was very welcoming and his knowledge and professionalism was evident. We initially thought the water had entered the basement though a window, but John quickly dismissed this theory when we discovered a floor drain that had backed up. This was a great relief to us. When we discovered the damage after being away for two weeks, we were very proactive and did some damage control by pulling up saturated rugs and flooring. John had great praise for us for doing this and mentioned this would help in the cleanup of the mess. He had equipment in our home very quickly and had us drying out in a record amount of time. We learned to trust him because of his honesty with us and professional demeanor. We were scheduled to go on vacation and could not cancel. We felt confident enough with John to give him a key to the house so he could have access to do his job. We don't do this normally, but felt comfortable enough with him to allow it.We can't say enough good about John and the company he works for. Great job!!!

I just wanted to thank you all for being so quick to respond to our water problem on Friday.  We were all kind of in panic mode and didn’t really know where to start.  I’m glad I thought to call SERVPRO because with your help, we were able to get the water out within a few hours.  We may have lost some things, but without your promptness to our emergency, it could’ve been so much worse.  So, thank you so much for sending Bud out right away.  He showed up with a smile even with all the chaos I’m sure you were all dealing with from Thursday and Friday.  Please let him know how appreciative we are for him showing up so quickly and getting the job done.
