Treynor, Iowa, located in Pottawattamie County, traces its beginnings to the late 1880s with the establishment of key community landmarks such as Fritz Eyberg’s General Store, August Olderog’s dance hall and saloon, and St. Paul’s German Evangelical Church. Early German immigrant farmers referred to the area as “Four Corners” or “High Five” until a post office was established in the early 1890s.
By the time Treynor was incorporated in 1905, it had grown into a thriving rural community with general stores, saloons, blacksmith shops, a livery stable, a furniture and implement business, and the Treynor State Bank. In 1911, the town even launched its own railroad line, though it ended operations after five years due to financial challenges. Like many communities, Treynor felt the impacts of the Great Depression, which led to the closure of the town bank. During the early Cold War years, an Air Force radar base operated just outside town, adding to Treynor’s unique historical footprint.
In 2020, Treynor faced a major disaster when a tractor and grain cart sparked a field fire that rapidly spread across 100 acres. The dry, windy conditions created a dangerous situation, prompting multiple fire departments, including Lewis Township, Council Bluffs, and Carson, to respond. The fire damaged homes, barns, and local businesses, leaving residents with extensive losses.
