Tabor, Iowa, located in Fremont County, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1852 by a group of settlers from Oberlin, Ohio. Their goal was to establish a Christian college, which became Tabor College. The college operated from 1853 until 1927, closing due to financial difficulties. During World War II, its former campus buildings were repurposed to house German prisoners of war, adding another unique chapter to the town’s history.
Tabor is also home to several historic landmarks, including the well-preserved Todd House. Built in 1853, the home belonged to Reverend John Todd, an abolitionist, Congregational minister, and co-founder of both Tabor College and the town itself.
One of Tabor’s most notable connections to American history is its role in the Underground Railroad. On July 4, 1854, the first rescue involving freedom seekers in the area took place. Samuel Adams, a local abolitionist, helped organize the escape of six enslaved individuals who were determined to reach freedom. Their journey took them through Chicago and ultimately onto ships traveling the Great Lakes to Canada, a month-long quest to secure their liberty. Their former enslaver later attempted to retrieve them, even paying slave hunters to track them down, but was unsuccessful.
