History of Yelm
Yelm, Washington is in Pierce County on the central-southeast side of Puget Sound. In the 1700s, there were many Native Americans settlers roaming the area. The city was originally known as “Elmtown”, but was later renamed for Yelm, a Native American chief who died in 1856. Regardless of its unusual name, Yelm has a history that dates back over 100 years. The first settlers were drawn to Yelm by the abundance of natural resources in the area. They also set up a stock farm and raised cattle, hogs, and sheep.
