Nested along the Enoree River in Newberry County, you will find the small town of Whitmire, SC. This small jewel of a town was named after George Fredrick Whitmire who came to South Carolina from Germany. The Whitmire family established a tavern and a post office to welcome the arrival of the Carolina and Northern Railway which led to rapid growth.
In the early 1900’s William Coleman along with several other townspeople established a large textile factory known as Glenn-Lowery Mill. It was one of the largest textile mills in the county. The mill was expanded several times and would remain a major source of revenue for the town of Whitmire. The town earned the title of “Pearl of the Piedmont” because it is nestled in the middle of Sumter National Forest.
Most of the buildings in downtown Whitmire were mainly built of wood and a fire destroyed the much of the downtown in 1916. But that did not deter the residents of Whitmire as they rebuilt the district with brick and many of these buildings are still standing today.
