St. Phillip Island was first settled by Europeans in the 17th century, and was later used as a plantation community. Today it continues to be a resort area, with St. Phillip Island itself being a major tourism destination. St. Phillip Island is a city in Beaufort County, South Carolina. It is located at the southern end of St. Phillip Island on Port Royal Sound, approximately 40 miles from historic Beaufort. St. Phillip Island is known for its beaches and golf courses, as well as historical landmarks such as Fort Sumter National Monument and Historic Annandale Plantation. Visitors come to see the wildlife and history of the area. St. Phillip Island, South Carolina has an interesting history that goes back hundreds of years, but it's best known for its wildlife and beaches.
What is St. Phillip Island known for?
St. Phillip Island is known for its natural beauty and history. The island was named for St. Phillip the Apostle, who came to the island in the 4th century. There are many historical landmarks including The Battery which is a fort built in 1703 and Fort Moultrie which was built in 1776 but was destroyed during the Revolutionary War in 1776. Another historic spot would be Oak Grove plantation—a museum with exhibits showcasing how people lived during that time period of history.
