About Port Royal, South Carolina
Port Royal is located on the Port Royal Sound, which is part of the sound side of the South Carolina coast. The town was formed around a village that was founded by Sir Thomas Dale in 1680 and officially established as the capital of Carolina through King Charles II’s Royal Charter. It quickly became one of the most important ports in colonial America due to its location near salt marshes and just across the river from mainland settlements. Port Royal has a rich history and heritage, including being one of the oldest marinas in America and having its own deep water channel leading directly to the Atlantic Ocean.
The History of Port Royal
The town is rich with history, as it dates back to 1670 when Charles Towne was founded by English settlers on Port Royal Island, part of what is now the coastal city of Beaufort. One historically significant landmark that visitors can see today is the Old Burying Ground at Historic St Phillip's Church. This church was established in 1720 and includes gravesites of early settlers and influential citizens such as Zacheus Burnham, who served as mayor and U.S. congressman in the 1780s. Port Royal, South Carolina is known for its historical significance and many historical landmarks. Port Royal was the largest and most active town in the region during the colonial period. It should be noted that this region was also the site of a famous Civil War battle.
