Tunkhannock is a borough in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, 31 miles northwest of Wilkes-Barre. In the past, lumbering was carried on extensively. Today, many residents are employed by the Procter & Gamble plant in nearby Washington Township. As of the 2020 census, the borough population was 1,766. Tunkhannock is a small, quiet, family friendly town that makes you feel like you've lived their all your life. Very friendly people that really love and support their area schools. The town is centrally located between bigger cities such as Scranton and Wilkes Barre.
Tunkhannock is translated from the Native American word “tank-hanne” meaning “small stream.” The Tunkhannock Creek runs through the center of the township, where it widens to form Long Pond, which is roughly three miles long and only a quarter-mile wide. This waterway empties into the Lehigh River to the west. With the surrounding bodies of water, Tunkhannock has seen its fair share of flooding due to severe storms. Most recently in 2011.
