Altamont is a small, historic village in the town of Guilderland in Albany County, New York that dates back to the early 1600s. It was the first village to incorporate in the town, and to this day, is still the only one to do so. In 1840, the village was named “Knowersville” after Benjamin Knower, an influential settler and New York State’s Treasurer. Then in the 1860s, the first passenger train, run by the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad, began passing through Altamont. A permanent depot was built to serve both as a passenger and freight station. That station is now the Altamont Free Library.

Altamont is the home to one of the largest fairgrounds in New York State, The Altamont Fairgrounds. Sprawling over 138 acres, the first annual Albany County Fair was held here in 1893. In the beginning days of the fair, the main events focused on livestock and harness horse racing. Nowadays, the Albany County Fair hosts a midway of carnival rides, live music, several museums, many different food vendors, and plenty of contests and competitions from arts and crafts, to beauty pageants, to livestock. Celebrating over 125 years, the Altamont Fair represents Albany, Schenectady and Greene Counties and people come from all over the state to continue in the tradition.
