Maywood was established as a borough on June 29, 1894. Its name comes from a train station that was part of the Midland Railroad. In 2022 this station was restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic places. The town is located near the intersection of Interstate Rt. 80 and Route 17. There is a cute downtown area located along West Pleasant Ave which includes several nice shops and eateries including the Maywood Pancake House and the Maywood Florist. Atlas Healthcare is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center located in town. Memorial Park on Grant Ave is packed with facilities for many sports and leisure activities.
The largest commercial shopping area is the Outlets at Bergen Town Center, formerly called the Bergen Mall, which straddles the border between Maywood and Paramus.
