Little Ferry was established in 1894. The borough was the site of an important ferry crossing of the Hackensack River, which was operated by rope pullies starting in 1659, continuing until 1826 when it was replaced by a bridge on the Bergen Turnpike. Gethsemane Cemetery, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was an African burial ground that opened in 1860 and was used until 1924.
Surrounding towns include Hackensack, Moonachie, Ridgefield, Ridgefield Park, South Hackensack, and Teterboro.
Notable town residents include Buddy “The Cake Boss” Valastro, Simpson’s producer Pete Michels, NHL goalie and Stanley Cup winner Chico Resch, and baseball player Oscar Gamble.
Little Ferry has a volunteer fire department. Perhaps the most famous fire in town was in 1937 when a major fire broke out in a 20th Century Fox film-storage facility in town. Flammable nitrate film had previously contributed to several fires in the film industry although the precise causes were often unknown. In Little Ferry, gases produced by decaying film, combined with high temperatures and inadequate ventilation, resulted in spontaneous combustion. One death and two injuries resulted from the fire, which also destroyed all the archived film in the vaults, resulting in the loss of most of the silent films produced by the Fox Film Corporation before 1932.
Many of the town’s shops and restaurants are located on Liberty St including Nova Burger and Mexican Grill, Ben’s Bagel Barn, and Wells Fargo Bank.
