In 1885, New York Mills was incorporated. The town was named because of the many timber mills within the community. After clearing almost all of the trees within the area, the town turned into a large farming community in the 1900s. The town was founded by Finnish immigrants who came to Minnesota in the 1800s. Which leaves the town to have many Finnish descendants. 

In the 2020 census, New York Mills population was at 1,249. For such a small town, they have a variety of arts for the public such as the Finn Creek Open Air Museum, New York Mills Sculpture Park and Barn and the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center. All great places for those who are interested in art or history!

The town also has a bowling alley called the Mills Lane and Lucky Strike, along with an amazing bakery known as Farmer’s Daughter Rustic Bakery. The bakery not only has baked goods, but also serves great lunch and dinner options.

New York Mills is not too far from Otter Tail Lake, making it a great day trip for those who spend their summers near Otter Tail Lake. Being so close to the lake means that another great activity for those living in or near New York Mills is fishing! There is a bait shop located right in town for all your bait and tackle needs.

The hotel had a fire June 2024 in the wee hours of the morning. At approximately 6:30am that same morning, SERVPRO arrived on property, set up their command post and literally within minutes, SERVPRO trucks, vans and employees started showing up. The SERVPRO team new where they were to go and what they needed to do. It didn't stop until their job was finished approximately 3-4 weeks later.
