The site of a grist mill that burned down before 1788, Burnt Mills became an important source of clean drinking water for Montgomery and Prince George's Counties in 1929 when the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) built a water filtration plant here along the Northwest Branch Anacostia River near Silver Spring, Maryland.
At the time of its construction in 1929, the water filtration plant at Burnt Mills was considered a landmark achievement by chief engineer Robert B. Morse, and reflects public awareness of the importance of managed water systems to public health. The plant's office and pumping station were housed inside two Georgian Revival style houses at 10700 and 10701 Colesville Road (also known as Columbia Pike). A steel and concrete hollow deck, Ambersen-style dam was built across the river.
The Robert B. Morse Filtration Plant ceased operation in 1962 when it was replaced by water filtration plants on the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers. Its water filtration and pumping facilities were removed, but the two Georgian Revival buildings and the dam remain. A historical marker identifies the location of the filtration plant and the site of the former Bealle's Mill at Burnt Mills.
Among the notable places here is Burnt Mills East Special Park, which provides parking for a section of the Northwest Branch Trail, a 12.9-mile trail that runs from Randolph Road in Wheaton South across Route 29 (Burnt Mills West) to the Prince George's County line. M-NCPPC acquired the 2.6-acre park in 1996.

Burnt Mills has a population of 3,592, according to the 2020 census, and is home to a large population Orthodox and Conservative Jews. The Silver Spring Eruv Association includes parts of Burnt Mills/White Oak and the nearby neighborhoods of Kemp Mill and Colesville. Burnt Mills is home to an Orthodox synagogue, the Southeast Hebrew Congregation, originally founded by Orthodox Eastern European immigrants in 1909 on Capitol Hill. Many Jews began to move out of SE Washington in the 1930s and Southeast Hebrew was relocated to White Oak in 1971.

On a recent Thursday before Memorial Day, I was traveling outside of the country, with my niece staying in our house, when she discovered a catastrophic leak coming from our third floor hall bathroom. Water had flooded the bathroom, adjacent bedrooms, was pooling in the drywall in our second floor dining room, was pouring down from our dining room chandelier, soaked our dining room set and made its way down through our hardwood flooring, and was dripping from our basement ceiling onto the carpeting of our finished basement. My niece called me frantically when she discovered the leak, and in turn I made a quick call to Trinh Le of SERVPRO of Rockville... Within one hour of that phone call, one of her teams was in our house working diligently to stop the water and mitigate the damage. They worked late into the evening, sopping up water, pulling up carpeting, removing fixtures, carpeting and drywall, and installing air movers and evaporators to address the water issues. We arrived home on Saturday night, and first thing Sunday morning another team met us at the house to assess the damage and determine what further steps were necessary. Unfortunately, water had gotten into the tile floor in the bathroom, and further remediation work was done on the spot, even though it was a Sunday during the memorial day weekend. The SERVPRO of Rockville team worked directly with my insurance company, they were fast and responsive, highly professional and saved me from a much bigger issues had I not called them. Each of the technicians I worked with explained to me in detail the steps they recommended and why, and gave me the great comfort of mind to know that their judgments were sound and necessary. I hope I never have to use them again, of course, but if I do you can be certain that I won't hesitate to call on SERVPRO of Rockville to help mitigate my flooding and water damage - they are the very best at what they do!

SERVPRO (of Rockville-Olney) came and did an excellent job! They came to my house very quick. They explained everything with my water damage and were a pleasure to work with.
Briand and his team were excellent. I couldn't ask for a better crew -- they removed all the floors in the master bedroom and bathroom and laundry and set up the air vacs and dehumidifier. Before embarking on anything Briand explained to me what was to be done and he answered all the questions I had for him. The crew with him were awesome. On the appointment dates and times, they were there on time and called me 15 minutes before arrival. One thing I can attest was the respect they had for my items and the trust as I did not need to worry. Safety and trust was key for me and I would trust this Team and would highly recommend Briand.
Sergio and two other (crew members) were outstanding and did an amazing job of cleaning and removing a dreadful mess when our garage ceiling fell down with what looked like tons of loose insulation. We cannot thank them enough.
The crew showed up very soon after we called them and stayed late into the night until the job was complete. Everyone was very professional and worked non-stop until finished. We were told when they would arrive and they showed up right on time and went right to work.
