Ideally located between Chicago and Indianapolis, Kentland, founded in 1860 as "Kent," is the county seat of Newton County. The Newton County Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. Kentland is the birthplace of humorist George Ade, for whom Purdue University's Ross-Ade Stadium is named for him and fellow Purdue benefactor David Ross.
Discovered in 1880, the Kentland Crater, currently used as a quarry, has been, and continues to be, studied as to its origins. The presence of shatter rock and deformed bedrock led geologists to conclude that the structure is a deeply eroded impact structure rather than volcanic in origin. The rocks don't slope to the southwest, as they normally do in Northern Indiana. The beds dip randomly at very steep angles, even standing vertically. Nowhere else in Indiana are rocks known to have deformed to this degree. Small grains of quartz, one of the strongest of common minerals, show evidence of great stress. The Meteorite Theory seems to be the best scientific explanation.

I honestly can’t say enough good about SERVPRO of Benton, Jasper, Newton and Southern Lake Counties! We had a major flood in our home from a broken hot water pipe last year. We were not home at the time it broke and 16 inches of 140 degree water ran into our basement, and all over our kitchen and dining room floors. (Our tankless hot water heater worked like a champ!)
