Umatilla, Florida proudly brands itself “Nature’s Hometown” and serves as the unofficial gateway to the Ocala National Forest. Located in northern Lake County, this small city had a population of about 3,685 at the 2020 census. Its motto reflects a lifestyle centered on lakes, springs and forests; residents and visitors enjoy boating, fishing, camping and hiking while still being within commuting distance of Orlando (about 38?miles to the southeast) and Daytona Beach (about 49?miles to the east). Florida State Road 19 runs through the middle of town, connecting Umatilla 11?miles south to Tavares (the Lake County seat) and 58?miles north through the Ocala National Forest to Palatka. The city covers roughly 4.27?square miles, of which 3.59?square miles are land and 0.68?square miles (about 16?%) are water. Its elevation is about 98?feet and coordinates are 28°55′38″N 81°39′54″W.
A look back at Umatilla’s history
Umatilla takes its name from Umatilla, Oregon. Early settlers established a post office in 1904, and the town officially incorporated on November 8 of that year. Citrus groves flourished around Lake Umatilla, Lake Enola and neighboring lakes; but in 1998 the Mediterranean fruit fly struck a Golden Gem citrus plant, temporarily threatening the local crop. Quick action by state officials and growers contained the outbreak, preserving a citrus heritage that still supports nurseries and U-pick farms. Today, the city council operates under a council-manager form of government with elected mayor and council members.
Gateway to the Ocala National Forest
Umatilla sits at the southern edge of the 387?000-acre Ocala National Forest, which covers nearly half a million acres of sand pine scrub, longleaf pines and crystal-clear springs. The city markets itself as the “Gateway to the Ocala National Forest,” a nickname earned by its proximity to multiple recreation sites and trailheads. One of the most popular destinations is Alexander Springs Recreation Area, about 13 miles north of town. Visitors wade in shallow sandy pools, snorkel in the 300-foot-deep spring bowl or scuba dive—the only spring in the forest where diving is permitted. The spring’s constant 72?°F water and dense cypress canopy make it a year-round draw for swimmers and kayakers. Hikers connect to the Florida National Scenic Trail, which extends approximately 1,300 miles from the Everglades to the Panhandle. Campsites, picnic areas and a nature boardwalk offer additional ways to enjoy the forest’s wildlife.
Other outdoor attractions surround Umatilla. At Trout Lake Nature Center, visitors explore wetland trails and interpretive exhibits highlighting Lake County’s aquatic ecosystems. North Lake Regional Park features multipurpose sports fields, walking paths and fishing piers; Sawgrass Island Preserve offers primitive hiking amid longleaf pines and saw palmettos. Those seeking adventure on the water can book an airboat excursion with Justin’s Jungle Airboat Rides on the Ocklawaha River. U-pick farms, roadside stands and Sunsational Farms’ “Big Orange” roadside attraction showcase Lake County’s agricultural roots. Family-owned eateries like Big Orange Grill, Crow BBQ and The Mason Jar serve burgers, barbecue and homestyle fare.
Geography and climate challenges
The city’s location between lakes and forests provides natural beauty but also brings hazards. Umatilla has about 0.68 square miles of surface water; during summer thunderstorms and tropical systems, these lakes and streams can overflow, sending water into yards, crawl spaces and ground-floor rooms. Prolonged rainfall saturates the sandy soil, leading to standing water around foundations. When carpets and drywall become soaked, residents rely on water damage restoration professionals to extract water, dry structural materials and prevent mold growth. Technicians use pumps, dehumidifiers and moisture meters to detect hidden moisture behind baseboards or under flooring. They also apply antimicrobial treatments and help homeowners document losses for insurance claims.
Fire risks and forest proximity
Living on the fringe of the Ocala National Forest means balancing recreation with fire safety. Dry winter months, lightning strikes and human activities can spark wildfires in the sand pine scrub and palmetto uplands. Brush piles, campfires and fireworks pose additional risks around homes and campsites. Older houses, some built before modern building codes, may have outdated wiring or lack proper fire breaks. Fire damage restoration professionals stress preventive measures: trimming vegetation at least 30 feet away from structures, cleaning gutters, inspecting electrical systems and keeping fire extinguishers accessible. Homeowners should also create evacuation plans and practice them regularly.
If a fire does occur, fire damage restoration teams help contain both visible and invisible damage. After firefighters extinguish flames, restoration specialists secure the property with board-ups or tarps, then remove charred debris and water-soaked materials. They use HEPA vacuums and chem sponges to clean soot from walls, ceilings and HVAC ducts. Ozone or hydroxyl generators neutralize smoke odors. Reconstruction crews repair or replace damaged studs, insulation, drywall and roofing, ensuring compliance with modern codes. Quick intervention reduces long-term costs and allows families to return home sooner.
Community life and amenities
Despite its small population, Umatilla offers a surprising number of amenities. City parks provide playgrounds, ballfields and picnic shelters; volunteers maintain a community garden and organize seasonal festivals. The historic downtown features a mural celebrating the city’s citrus heritage and houses the Public Library and City Hall. Each year the community hosts the Florida Black Bear Festival, highlighting the importance of bear conservation and educating visitors about living alongside wildlife. The festival includes guided hikes, educational programs and live music.
Across town, Sunsational Farms sells fresh orange juice, produce and ice cream. Red Tail Golf Club, just south in Sorrento, provides an 18-hole championship course for residents who enjoy golfing. The nearby Umatilla Municipal Airport accommodates small planes and provides sightseeing flights over the Harris Chain of Lakes. For lodging, visitors choose from waterfront cottages, rustic campgrounds or family-run motels like Lakeside Cottages and Old Stream Motel. Camp Challenge, a fully accessible camp near Umatilla, hosts retreats for children and adults with disabilities and relies on volunteers from the community.
Living in “Nature’s Hometown”
Umatilla’s identity revolves around its natural surroundings. Locals fish for bass in Lake Umatilla, paddle kayaks on spring-fed creeks and hike under the shade of sand pines. The Florida Trail passes through nearby Alexander Springs, allowing long-distance hikers to resupply in town. Families spend weekends at Trout Lake Nature Center or North Lake Regional Park, while hunters and bird-watchers head into Ocala National Forest to observe deer, turkey and black bears. Agricultural heritage persists in citrus groves and blueberry farms.
Such proximity to nature requires preparedness. Homeowners should have emergency kits with water, nonperishable food and flashlights, and monitor weather alerts during hurricane season. Keeping drainage ditches clear and installing water barriers reduces the likelihood of flooding. Regularly testing smoke alarms and servicing fire suppression systems decreases fire hazards. When disasters strike, partnering with professionals who specialize in water damage restoration and fire damage restoration ensures that homes and businesses are repaired quickly and correctly. These services—available 24/7—help residents recover from storms, floods and fires without sacrificing the small-town charm that makes Umatilla special.

customers are saying
The SERVPRO team did an amazing job cleaning my carpets.
Dave and Tobias came after my silly mistake 9f leaving an unattended hose filling a spa in my Florida room. They were professional and courteous. They are the best and considering this was at 8:30 on a Saturday night can't say how grateful and pleased I am to them and SERVPRO I hope I never need them again but if I do they will definitely be who I rely on. Thanks again
From the moment the people came out to take a look at the mold problem in my home it has been a pleasure they are a great company to work with very educated about mold problems and explain in a way that a lay person can understand. Everyone at this company from Mike the man that came out to do the estimate down to the three guys that came and did the cleaning of the floors it's been an awesome experience. I highly recommend this company to anyone and everyone you will not be disappointed!
Thank you for being so prompt, professional and knowledgeable to take care of the water issue that occurred in my home.
Dave and Tobias were awesome. Very professional and prompt very respectful and courteous they did a great job seeing that everything was dry and taken care of.
SERVPRO of Lake County, FANTASTIC!!! They were always on time, polite, clean and kind. We called when we flooded and they responded quickly. They stopped the water damage from spreading further and dried EVERYTHING faster than I thought was possible. They used dehumidifiers, fans, etc. and other methods to thoroughly fix our "disaster" and give piece-of-mind to our family. The stayed long enough and used all the equipment needed for as long as it was needed. They constantly checked the moisture levels in the rooms of the house to ensure the floors and walls were completely dry and mold-free. I would recommend SERVPRO to anyone needing assistance in a similar situation. Nothing but praise for them. Thank you, SERVPRO. You saved my mom's home
