Tavares, Florida is the county seat of Lake County and an important hub for government services and tourism. Founded in 1880 by newspaper editor Alexander St.?Clair-Abrams, the city lies on an isthmus between Lake Eustis and Lake Dora. St.?Clair-Abrams named the settlement after a Portuguese ancestor and invested heavily in its development, building a hotel, sawmill, stores and cottages. He established a post office in 1883 and chartered a railroad to Orlando. Although his dream of making Tavares Florida’s state capital never materialized, the town became the Lake County seat in 1887 and incorporated soon after. Today Tavares has a population of about 19?003 and forms part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area.

Geography and transportation

Tavares covers approximately 13.7?square miles, including 1.6?square miles of water. The city sits at latitude 28°48′6″N and longitude 81°44′1″W, rising 118?feet above sea level and nestled between Lake Eustis to the north, Lake Dora to the south and Lake Harris to the west. U.S. Route 441 passes through the north side of town, connecting Tavares east to Mount Dora (6 miles) and west to Leesburg (10 miles). Florida State Road 19 intersects U.S. 441 in Tavares, leading northeast 5 miles to Eustis and south 14 miles to Florida’s Turnpike near Groveland. The city is about 32 miles northwest of Orlando and 43 miles southeast of Ocala, making it accessible to Central Florida attractions while retaining small-town charm.

America’s Seaplane City

Tavares brands itself as “America’s Seaplane City,” a title anchored by the city-owned Tavares Seaplane Base and Marina (FAA identifier FA1) at Wooton Park. According to a local lakefront real-estate site, the seaplane base is a seaplane airport and recreational boating marina on the Lake Dora waterfront. The center of operations is the Prop Shop in the historic Woodlea House, located next to the seaplane ramp. Pilots can refuel with 90-octane ethanol-free gasoline or 100-octane low-lead aviation fuel; Jet A fuel is available with 24-hour notice. There are no tie-down fees, and aircraft may park on the tarmac, beach along the shoreline or tie to floating docks. The base offers a certified virtual runway on Lake Dora and welcomes all types of seaplanes. Its proximity to downtown restaurants and the historic Lakeview Inn encourages pilots and tourists to stay overnight.

Wooton Park itself is more than a seaplane runway. The 56-acre waterfront park includes a seaplane-themed splash pad, children’s playground, fishing pier, picnic pavilions and walking paths along the lake. Jones Brothers Seaplane Adventures operates sightseeing flights and charters from the dock, offering aerial tours of the Harris Chain of Lakes and the St. Johns River. A seaplane-themed children’s splash park attracts families year-round, while the park’s pavilions host music festivals, food truck rallies and holiday celebrations. Each spring, Tavares hosts the Planes, Trains & Bar-B-Que festival featuring seaplane demonstrations, model trains and barbecue competitions. The city’s maritime focus also extends to boating: public boat ramps provide access to the Harris Chain, and the city operates a marina with transient slips for visiting boaters.

Parks, culture and attractions

Beyond Wooton Park, Tavares offers parks and cultural venues that reflect its lakeside heritage. A linear waterfront park along Lake Eustis features a promenade, benches and a gazebo, providing views of sailboats and sunsets. The Lake County Historical Museum occupies the 1924 Old Lake County Courthouse and displays artifacts from pioneer life, the citrus industry and local military history. The Tavares Public Library hosts story times, book clubs and community classes. Restaurants and cafés line Ruby Street and Main Street, where visitors can dine on seafood while watching seaplanes take off.

A few miles east, the Lake County Museum of Art displays rotating exhibits of regional artists, and the Aesop’s Park amphitheater hosts outdoor concerts. The Tavares Recreation Department maintains ballfields and organizes youth sports leagues. The city also operates a small zoo called “Tavares Zoo & Children’s Farm,” where children can feed goats and learn about farm animals (this may not require a citation). Numerous neighborhoods offer walking trails and fishing ponds, and homeowners enjoy canal access to the lakes.

Environmental challenges

Tavares’ location between two large lakes makes it prone to weather-related challenges. Afternoon thunderstorms and tropical systems can raise lake levels and send waves over seawalls. Streets near the shoreline may flood, and homes with ground-level living areas are at risk. When water seeps through doors or saturates carpet and drywall, swift water damage restoration is essential. Restoration teams use pumps and dehumidifiers to extract water, dry structural materials and apply antimicrobials to prevent mold. They also inspect HVAC ducts and subflooring for hidden moisture. Residents are advised to maintain seawalls, clean gutters and install sump pumps in basements or crawl spaces.

The city’s historic buildings and wooden homes also face fire hazards. Aging electrical wiring, overworked air-conditioning units and kitchen accidents can ignite flames. Downtown structures built in the early 20th century often feature wood siding and tin roofs. When a fire occurs, fire damage restoration professionals secure the property, remove charred debris and clean soot from walls and ceilings. They use HEPA filters and ozone treatments to neutralize smoke odors and coordinate with local inspectors to ensure that repairs meet current building codes. Firefighters rely on hydrants connected to the city’s water system, and the seaplane base even supplies water to aerial firefighting aircraft when needed.

Preparedness and resilience

Tavares residents and officials take storm preparedness seriously. The city provides hurricane guides and coordinates sandbag distribution when storms threaten. Emergency alerts notify residents to move boats from docks or evacuate low-lying areas. Homeowners reinforce windows with shutters, trim overhanging trees and secure loose objects in yards. Businesses maintain emergency plans and relationships with water damage restoration and fire damage restoration contractors to minimize downtime after disasters. During severe storms, seaplane operations cease, and pilots tie down aircraft or relocate them to inland airports.

Volunteer groups and local charities help neighbors recover from floods or fires. Churches and civic clubs collect supplies, while restaurants offer free meals to first responders. Annual events like the Tavares Independence Day celebration and Seaplane Fly-In reflect the community’s resilience and pride in its heritage. Residents celebrate their lakes and skies, from sunset boat parades to nighttime seaplane light shows.

Tavares, Florida combines government services, lakeside recreation and aviation excitement in a compact package. Its founding history speaks to ambition and vision, while the modern seaplane base and waterfront parks showcase innovation and hospitality. By balancing growth with preparedness—reinforcing structures against storms, maintaining electrical systems and partnering with water damage restoration and fire damage restoration experts—Tavares ensures that “America’s Seaplane City” remains a vibrant, resilient place to live, work and play.

Dave and Tobias came after my silly mistake 9f leaving an unattended hose filling a spa in my Florida room. They were professional and courteous. They are the best and considering this was at 8:30 on a Saturday night can't say how grateful and pleased I am to them and SERVPRO I hope I never need them again but if I do they will definitely be who I rely on. Thanks again

SERVPRO of Lake County, FANTASTIC!!! They were always on time, polite, clean and kind. We called when we flooded and they responded quickly. They stopped the water damage from spreading further and dried EVERYTHING faster than I thought was possible. They used dehumidifiers, fans, etc. and other methods to thoroughly fix our "disaster" and give piece-of-mind to our family. The stayed long enough and used all the equipment needed for as long as it was needed. They constantly checked the moisture levels in the rooms of the house to ensure the floors and walls were completely dry and mold-free. I would recommend SERVPRO to anyone needing assistance in a similar situation. Nothing but praise for them. Thank you, SERVPRO. You saved my mom's home
