Shalimar, Florida is part of the Fort Walton Beach–Crestview–Destin Metropolitan Statistical Area in Okaloosa County – part of the state’s western panhandle. The most recent census estimate is that fewer than 300 people live in Shalimar, making it a small town with easy access to busy urban areas.
The area was originally called Fort Dixie. In 1927, the Choctawhatchee and Northern Railroad was chartered to build a line of rails to run between Galliver and Crestview on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in Okaloosa County, to a point in Choctawhatchee Bay – approximately 28 miles. While these plans did not materialize, the area became known to developers. Between 1943 and 1944, Clifford Meigs purchased land in the woods and built 160 houses for military officers. Since housing was in short supply, these homes became popular. Meigs became the town’s first postmaster in 1943, and then the first mayor in 1947, by which time the town had become Shalimar, possibly named for the royal gardens in India because of the lush vegetation.
