The Rocky Bayou State Park is one of the most beautiful sites in the northwestern part of Florida – considering the stunning ocean and bay views and the flourishing wildlife, that’s saying something.
The park’s existence is largely credited to the efforts of U.S. Air Force Colonel Fred Gannon. During World War II, the area was a practice range for the bombers in nearby Eglin AFB (which was then part of the United States Army). Despite the area’s heavy use as a target range, some old-growth Long Leaf Pine Trees remained. Gannon understood the value of these trees and the wildlife. Park experts estimate that the trees are over 300 years old.
This park’s name is officially the Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park, but “Rocky Bayou” is how it is best known.
The bayou – for which the park is named – is the park’s most prominent feature. It is an outlet of Choctawhatchee Bay.
The park maintains a double-lane boat ramp, making this area an ideal place from which to launch boats for fishing, canoeing, and sightseeing. Expect to find both freshwater and saltwater fish. For those who prefer freshwater fishing alone, Puddin Head Lake is in the center of the park.
Other recreational opportunities are hiking, bicycling, camping, picnicking, and wildlife photography or viewing. The campground is shaded and has all the modern facilities; visitors don’t have to rough it to sleep rough.
