Niceville is a city in Okaloosa County, Florida. Originally named Boggy (after Boggy Bayou), it was part of Walton County until 1915 when Okaloosa County was formed from parts of Walton County and Santa Rosa County. In 1910, the town – perhaps as part of an image-buffing campaign – changed its name to Niceville.
Boggy Bayou opens into the Choctawhatchee Bay, right here on the western part of Florida’s panhandle. The bay is part of the Emerald Coast – aerial photographs show why that name is so spot-on. Choctawhatchee Bay is an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico, to which it is connected by East Pass (a/k/a Destin Pass). It also connects to Santa Rosa Sound in Fort Walton Beach, and to St. Andrews Bay in Bay County via the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The Mid-Bay Bridge crosses the bay, connecting the city of Destin to Niceville, Florida.
Most of this water, fortunately, stays where it belongs. The real danger of flooding comes from our frequent storms. Florida, like the rest of the United States, is no stranger to structural fires.
