Mary Esther Cleanup and Restoration

The first postmaster of Mary Esther had two daughters: Esther and Mary Newton. Mary Esther has grown since its 1871founding. Mary Esther is part of the Fort Walton Beach–Crestview–Destin Metropolitan Statistical Area, but it feels more like a small town. It is thoroughly modern as it is between Hurlburt Field and Eglin Air Force Base.  

The first European-American settlers of Mary Esther were Jesse Rogers and his family; they drove a large herd of cattle from Louisiana to Santa Rosa Sound in 1841, explored the area, and decided to settle here instead of returning to their earlier home. This area was all part of the Fort Walton/ The Narrows district, and not yet identifiable as its own village – something that wouldn’t happen until nearly 30 years later. In 1946, the town elected E. Roger Pryor as its mayor and incorporated as a mall city.  

Mary Esther shares its streets with shy, but not approachable, bears. Both Okaloosa County and the state itself recommend that residents keep food-stained litter and food scraps in bear-resistant (note, not bear-proof) containers that are locked away from the street. Don’t put the containers outside until the morning of pick-up; bears are smart enough to come out the night before and puzzle out the containers. 

With or without bears, residents of Mary Esther value their property.
