Eglin Air Force Base (Eglin AFB from here on) is a United States Air Force (USAF) base in the west part of Florida’s panhandle. It is about 4 miles southwest of Valparaiso in Okaloosa County.
The United States Military established Eglin AFB in 1935; it was then Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base. Two years later, the military renamed the base after Lt. Colonel Frederick I. Eglin after he was killed in a crash of his Northrop A-17. Eglin was a career officer in the United States Army Air Service and United States Army Air Corps. He was 45 years old when he died.
The USAF became a separate branch – apart from the army – in 1947, at which point the Eglin Field became the Eglin AFB.
The base includes training units and housing in addition to supporting flying and test-aircraft operations. In addition, it houses the aval School of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate (AFRL/RW), the 7th Special Forces Group (7th SFG), and units from other countries.
It is a small city with the discipline of a tight military unit.
