Altoona, Florida is a tiny unincorporated community and census-designated place on the eastern edge of Lake County. With a population of just 98 people in 2020, Altoona is one of the smallest towns in Central Florida. It lies along Florida State Road 19 at 28°?57′?57″ N, 81°?38′?54″ W—about eight miles south of Eustis and fourteen miles south of Tavares, the county seat. To the north, State Road 19 enters the Ocala National Forest and stretches 55 miles to Palatka. Although tiny, Altoona is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area, offering residents easy access to cities while retaining a rural character. Its 0.47-square-mile footprint includes rolling sand hills and 0.02 square miles of water.

A brief history of Altoona

Altoona was settled in the late nineteenth century and either borrowed its name from Allatoona, Georgia, or from Altoona, Pennsylvania, the hometown of its first merchant, Augustus Gottschce. The fledgling town incorporated on 12 February 1887 but suffered a disastrous fire in 1899 that destroyed most buildings and wiped out the tax base. After the fire, Altoona relinquished its municipal charter on 27 May 1899 and never reincorporated. Today it remains an unincorporated community with a post office (ZIP 32702), a volunteer fire station, several churches and scattered homes set amid live oaks and longleaf pines. For many years citrus groves and small farms dotted the countryside. Although the big freeze of the 1980s and changing markets reduced commercial citrus operations, backyard trees still bloom and locals tend gardens and livestock. Veterans are honored at the Robert M. McTureous Jr. Memorial Park and Museum, dedicated to a Medal of Honor recipient born nearby.

Gateway to the Ocala National Forest

Altoona sits on the doorstep of the 441,925-acre Ocala National Forest, the southernmost national forest in the continental United States. The forest is bordered by the Ocklawaha River to the west and north, Lake George and the St. Johns River to the east, and State Highway 100 to the south. Its deep, porous sand drains water quickly, creating an environment where sand pines, scrub jays and black bears thrive. Hiking, hunting, bird-watching and off-road cycling draw visitors year-round. Because Altoona is one of the last communities before entering the forest from the south, it is sometimes called the “Gateway to the Forest.” Locals tell stories of black bears wandering through yards and deer grazing in pastures. The Green Mountain Scenic Byway runs nearby, offering vistas of Lake County’s lakes and ridges.

A standout attraction is the Lake Dorr Recreation Area, which sits on the northwest shore of Lake Dorr and is part of the national forest. Described as a “massive patch of blue in a sea of green”, Lake Dorr is one of the prettiest large lakes in the Ocala National Forest. Visitors can camp beneath oak hammocks in the campground, rent a lakeside cabin, launch boats from the ramp or picnic by the water. The site welcomes tents, campers and RVs and offers activities like boating, fishing for bass and waterskiing. Families enjoy swimming off sandy shores and watching sunsets over the lake. For paddlers and anglers, the nearby Alexander Springs and Juniper Springs provide crystal-clear waters teeming with fish and turtles. These natural amenities draw eco-tourists and locals alike, but they also illustrate the importance of environmental stewardship.

Living with nature’s rhythms

Altoona’s beauty comes with challenges. Summer thunderstorms and the occasional tropical system drench the sandy soil. When intense rain falls, low-lying areas around Lake Dorr and smaller ponds can flood, sending water into yards, crawl spaces and ground-floor rooms. In such cases, homeowners rely on professional water damage restoration to extract standing water, dry walls and flooring, and prevent mold growth. Restoration technicians use high-capacity pumps, dehumidifiers and moisture meters to detect hidden moisture behind baseboards or under subfloors. Because the Ocala National Forest’s soil drains quickly, water can seep through foundations if they are not properly sealed. Residents are advised to maintain gutters, install French drains and place sandbags around vulnerable entryways during hurricane season.

Dry seasons bring a different hazard—wildfire. The sandy scrub is highly flammable when vegetation dries, and lightning strikes or careless campfires can ignite quickly. Altoona’s 1899 conflagration is a historical reminder that fires can destroy a community. Many homes are wood-framed, and some have outdated electrical systems. Regularly clearing brush, pruning trees and creating defensible space around buildings reduce risk. If a fire occurs, fire damage restoration professionals are vital. They secure damaged structures, remove charred debris, clean soot from walls and ceilings, and deploy air scrubbers to eliminate smoke odor. They also address water left behind by firefighters, using the same tools employed in water damage restoration to dry out materials and prevent secondary mold damage. Quick response helps families return home sooner and preserves Altoona’s rustic charm.

Community spirit and rural lifestyle

Despite its tiny size, Altoona has a strong sense of identity. Churches host potluck dinners and holiday celebrations; neighbors gather at the community center for fish fries and craft fairs. The local volunteer fire department organizes safety workshops and works closely with the Florida Forest Service during wildfire season. Farmers sell honey, fresh eggs and vegetables at roadside stands. Outdoor enthusiasts frequent Lake Dorr or venture into the national forest to hunt deer and turkey or hike the Florida Trail. The city’s location along State Road 19 makes it a convenient base for exploring the Ocala National Forest, Alexander Springs and nearby towns like Eustis and Tavares. When heavy rains or fires disrupt daily life, residents help one another clear debris, repair fences and rebuild. They also partner with professional water damage restoration and fire damage restoration services to ensure homes and businesses are repaired correctly and safely.

Preparing for the future

Altoona’s natural surroundings and modest population make it easy to overlook the need for preparedness. However, living on the edge of a national forest and near numerous lakes demands vigilance. Homeowners should inspect roofs, caulk windows and elevate electrical components to reduce water intrusion. Installing smoke detectors, updating wiring and clearing brush protect against fire. Local officials encourage residents to create emergency plans that include contact information for professional restoration services. By embracing both the joys and challenges of rural living—and by working with experienced water damage restoration and fire damage restoration teams when needed—Altoona can preserve its “Nature’s Hometown” identity while safeguarding its homes and natural landscapes for future generations.

Dave and Tobias came after my silly mistake 9f leaving an unattended hose filling a spa in my Florida room. They were professional and courteous. They are the best and considering this was at 8:30 on a Saturday night can't say how grateful and pleased I am to them and SERVPRO I hope I never need them again but if I do they will definitely be who I rely on. Thanks again

SERVPRO of Lake County, FANTASTIC!!! They were always on time, polite, clean and kind. We called when we flooded and they responded quickly. They stopped the water damage from spreading further and dried EVERYTHING faster than I thought was possible. They used dehumidifiers, fans, etc. and other methods to thoroughly fix our "disaster" and give piece-of-mind to our family. The stayed long enough and used all the equipment needed for as long as it was needed. They constantly checked the moisture levels in the rooms of the house to ensure the floors and walls were completely dry and mold-free. I would recommend SERVPRO to anyone needing assistance in a similar situation. Nothing but praise for them. Thank you, SERVPRO. You saved my mom's home
