The town of Sullivan (formally known as Winfield) is a small community located 30 miles west of Milwaukee and 40 miles east of Madison. Known for being the location of the National Weather Service forecast office MKX, Sullivan houses just a little over 2000 residents in its community.
On June 21, 1881 two men named Earl Newton and Enock B. Fargo discovered the area and decided it would be a good place for travelers to settle. With the future railroad coming they anticipated a bright future for the area and they were right. Once the railroad came, they built a depot and the community began to prosper. In July of 1915, John Boettcher and his attorney John Hazelwood passed a petition around the community for Winfield to officially become incorporated as the “Village of Sullivan”.
With Sullivan’s wetlands and other bodies of water nearby, there is an increased risk of flooding during the spring and summer months.
