At the farthest western end of the Richmond area lives a town that got its name through a most unlikely scenario. In 1815 a Revolutionary War veteran by the name of Robert Hyde Saunders constructed a tavern at the intersection of what is now Three Chopt Road and Pouncy Tract Road. Under the porch of the tavern sat a water pump for patrons to give water to the horses of their stagecoaches. Unfortunately, the handle for the pump was too long and would hit the bottom of the porch before you could get a full pump of water out, so Saunders cut the pump handle short enough to allow more room. This “short handled” pump soon became synonymous with the tavern and people began to say they’d “meet at the short pump” indicating they wanted to meet up at the tavern. As the tavern grew in popularity an access road was created to get to the building and was named pump road, solidifying the name. While the tavern no longer stands, its legacy lives on as the town was officially named Short Pump in 1853.

Nowadays, Short Pump is known for its shopping centers and restaurants. Short Pump Town Center, an open-air shopping mall, was opened in 2003 and remains a destination for many of Richmond and the surrounding area’s residents to get their shopping done. As you drive down West Broad Street towards Goochland, you’ll find a number of upscale restaurants such as Texas de Brazil, Maggiano’s, and The Boathouse.
