A Long History
Park City began as a small mining town in the 1860s following the discovery of rich silver and gold deposits. Its name comes from Parley's Park, named after Parley P. Pratt, a leader of the first early Mormon pioneers who passed through Parley's Canyon en route to Salt Lake City. He built and maintained the first road for transportation through the canyon as a toll road for travelers passing through California searching for gold. In 1884, George and Rhoda Snyder, the first settlers in the town, shortened Parley's Park City to Park City. Beautiful Victorian buildings remain in the downtown area and are on the National Registry of Historic Places.
After the Great Depression, the price of gold and silver declined, and Park City leaders sought new ways to promote their city. Near ideal weather and geological conditions contributed to its transformation into what is now the largest ski area in the United States. Park City hosts the famous Sundance Film Festival and welcomes visitors to enjoy skiing on 17 groomed slopes, along with over 300 hiking and biking trails.
