About Canyon, TX
Canyon is the county seat of Randall County in Texas. The population as of the 2010 census was around 13,000 people. It is considered part of the Amarillo Metropolitan statistical area, and is home to West Texas A&M University.
Canyon is known for some very interesting landmarks including JA Ranch, the Panhandle's oldest cattle ranching operation, a 47-foot statue of a cowboy that was constructed in 1959 and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum.
History of Canyon, TX
Canyon, Texas was originally incorporated in 1906, but had been an unofficial community since the mid to late 1800s. The community was settled over time, namely by J.G. Conner. Shortly after Conner settled, his home became a centerpiece for the community, serving as the post office, general store, and voting location.
In 1898, the railroad came through what was then called Canyon City, creating the first industry in the area. Cattle ranchers began shipping cattle in and out of Canyon City as a way to make a living. The community slowly grew over time, certainly with the help of the Pecos and Northern Railroad.
