About Signal Mountain, TN
Signal Mountain, Tennessee is a city in Hamilton County, Tennessee. It's located between downtown Chattanooga and the border of Georgia. Signal Mountain was named for the signal fires which were built on its hills in the 18th century to warn Cherokee Indians of impending danger. Signal Mountain also has two parks: Signal Point Park and also Hunter House Hollow Historic Village. Once known for its mining industry and railroad connections to nearby Chattanooga, the area has become a tourist destination. The history of Signal Mountain, TN
The first known European settlers in the area around Signal Mountain were the Cherokee Indians, who established a village named "Tuckaleechee" on its site in 1759. In 1782, Tuckaleechee was connected to the rest of civilization by Daniel Ross’ Ferry which ran between Chattanooga and what would become Rossville, Georgia. The Civil War Battle of Lookout Mountain was fought above Signal Point in 1863 and this battle helped to turn back General Sherman’s forces during his famed “March To The Sea.”
