Ooltewah, Tennessee is a small town in the Great Smoky Mountains of the USA. Ooltewah is located between Chattanooga and Gatlinburg, on US Highway 411. Ooltewah, Tennessee is bordered by Chattanooga and Hixson on the north side, Harrison and Signal Mountain to the south, and Lookout Mountain on the east.
History of Ooltewah
For a while, Ooltewah was the county seat for James County, but that county went bankrupt in 1919 and was incorporated into Hamilton County shortly after. The former James County Courthouse is a major landmark in the town of Ooltewah. Ooltewah played a major role in the Civil War with the 4th Michigan Cavalry even capturing enemies in Ooltewah. It is believed the name Ooltewah was derived from a Cherokee cognate of the Muscogee word "italwa" that means "principal ground." Many locals believe the name is translated to "Owls Nest" or "Owls Roost."
