History of Harrison, Tennessee
The town of Harrison started to develop because of the nearby Vann's Ferry. This is a ferry crossing area created by a prominent Cherokee man, James Vann. This area was named Harrison after the President William Henry Harrison. Harrison held the county seat for Hamilton County for a few years starting in 1840. Harrison had their first post office open on June 16, 1841. The Hamilton County Courthouse was moved from Harrison to Chattanooga in 1870. When the Chickamauga Dam was completed in 1940, much of Harrison was flooded, and the city limits became smaller because of the flooding.
