The massive pulp and paper company Bowater (now Resolute Forest Products) built a plant in Calhoun in 1954, and it quickly expanded to become one of the continent's biggest newsprint mills. 750,000 metric tons of newspaper and specialty paper are produced annually at the mill, which occupies the western side of Calhoun.
