Tiverton, Rhode Island has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. It was a sanctuary for Americans fleeing British oppression when the Brits held the neighboring Aquidneck Island hostage. The town became known as a gathering place for colonial forces looking to drive out the British.
The town is located in the northeast corner of Rhode Island and along with the Rhode Island town of Little Compton, it shares borders with no other Rhode Island towns, only with the Massachusetts towns of Westport and Fall River. The Sakonnet River runs up the west coast of the town separating it from Aquidneck Island. The salt water river is home to Grinnell’s Beach, a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The other popular beach location, Fogland Beach, features a nature preserve, hiking, fishing, and boating. The Fogland Preserve is one of many preservation areas in the town and some of the town's original farmland is still in operation.
