Torresdale, originally Torrisdale, was named by Charles Macalester Jr. for his family's ancestral Scotland home. The town was considered to be the location of the city that William Penn hoped to establish. Although it ended up being established in a more southern part of the area. Torresdale, along with Holmesburg to its south and Andalusia to its north, had been one of Philadelphia's early suburban neighborhoods.
