In 1847 Laporte, a mountain resort, was founded. Laporte is named after John Laporte, a Surveyor General of Pennsylvania and formerly a lumbering and tannery center. It’s the smallest county seat in Pennsylvania and in 1969 was one of the two smallest in the US.

Located in the heart of Laporte is the historic Sullivan County Courthouse which was built in 1894. It was added to the historic registry in 1978. The courthouse has two floors, as well as a basement, a chimney and four-story bell tower. Brick is the main building material used but does have cut stone and old school hardwood windows. The main courthouse is 92 feet by 60 feet but also has a squared shaped area of 28 feet on one side. Located inside the courthouse are county offices, the sheriff’s office, and the jail.

One of the main attractions in Laporte is the Air Museum, which is open on Saturdays throughout the year.  The museum houses living and flying collections of airplanes. They range from the years 1904 all the way up to 1940. What makes the museum so unique is that most of the planes are flown regularly from the local airport. The planes have been flown by some famous pilots in the past including two female pilots. Elinor Smith and Louise Smith have set world records while flying a few of the planes housed at the museum. While there are 31 planes currently on location there are numerous more that are undergoing the restoration process as well.

I had a freak disaster in my home and I called and spoke to Melissa who from beginning to end was fantastic! I spoke to Melissa several times and it was professional and a great experience every time. The first evening the project manager Joe came in and explained everything to me. He was courteous and professional, addressed all my questions, everything he explained came to fruition. Nothing swayed from the initial game plan. Throughout the next few days, Levi, Zach, and Corey were all there completing all the work. Levi kept me informed of everything and answered all of my additional questions. Although I didn’t speak to Zach and Corey as much the work all of these gentleman accomplished was phenomenal and I can’t begin to thank them enough for their hard work.
