Kirkwood’s history can be traced back to the Native Americans that resided here. Their tools are still discovered by the rivers and land. Settlers later arrived and built homes along the rivers. One of the earliest settlers built a gristmill in this area, helping to introduce the flour industry to traders and local towns. Farms and other industries soon developed and played a role in the economic development of the region. The need for trade and supplies in Kirkwood led to an established travel route, a heavily traveled road that is now called Old State Road.
Kirkwood is home to several sites that signify a piece of history. The White Rock Forge covered bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This bridge covers the western area of Octoraro Creek and serves as a popular site for nature seekers.
Kirkwood sits on the northern side of the Susquehanna River in an area where rain often falls. This leads to a substantial risk of flooding, storm, or other water damage events for the town.
