Situated along the Susquehanna River, Danville was founded in 1792 by William Montgomery and named for his Daniel. In 1850 Danville became the county seat of the newly formed Montour County. In the Mid 19th century Danville became a transportation center as early railroad technology was developed. Canal boats navigated up and down the Susquehanna from Wilkes-Barre to Harrisburg. Along with the river access, railroads helped develop Danville in the early years.
In 1915 The Geisinger Hospital was completed which was built by Abigail Geisinger who was the widow of iron magnate George Geisinger. The hospital has grown over the years and has become one of the largest employers throughout Pennsylvania. Geisinger Health systems serves over half a million patients across the NE United States. In September 2021 Geisinger now operates over 11 hospitals and smaller care clinic facilities and pharmacies.
In early 2022 there was an accident which dumped 100 lab monkeys in Danville and 4 monkeys escaped. Three monkeys were later euthanized, while another remains missing. The truck was bound for a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) facility, leading to fears of a disease outbreak; several witnesses reported symptoms following their contact with the monkeys and were advised to quarantine by the CDC.
