Ravenna was founded by Benjamin Tappan, who first arrived here on June 11, 1799. The first Ravenna mail route was established in 1802 and the first school opened in 1803.

In 1853, the Ohio Women’s Rights Association held its first statewide meeting in Ravenna. The attendees helped draft a petition to the Ohio General Assembly, requesting legislation that would grant women more rights.

The annual Ravenna Balloon A-Fair in the fall is a largely attended event by not just the local communities but by visitors from all over the country.  This September festival is a four-day extravaganza which includes a children's parade, hot air balloon glow at dusk, live music, food vendors, beer and wine vendors, and craft show. The fun is at Sunbeau Valley Farm with a hot air balloon launches and a static display that lets you get up close to the balloons.
