The county seat in Hardin County is Kenton, Ohio. Named after United States frontiersman Simon Kenton, it became a city in 1886. Located in the center of the public square you will find the Hardin County Courthouse, a historical site. In 2001 an unmanned train left Walbridge, OH carrying thousands of gallons of a molten phenol, a dangerous chemical that can be harmful when inhaled, ingested, or comes in contact with skin. For two hours CSX employees tried to find a way to stop the train and were successful in getting the train stopped just outside of Kenton. This inspired Unstoppable, a major motion picture.

This region in Ohio is characterized by four distinct seasons. Winters are cold, summers are muggy, and there is significant precipitation year-round making the area susceptible to water damage.  The winter months bring with it snow, ice and frigid temperatures causing potential pipe freezing and burst.
