Ortley Beach, also known as Dover Beaches South, is not that large in size, less than a square mile in area. It sits on the Barnegat Peninsula, a long, narrow barrier peninsula that separates Barnegat Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. This beautiful beach community was once home to Cranberry Inlet, an important maritime route that closed due to a storm in 1812. Like most Jersey Shore towns, it is known for its hot, slightly humid summers and cold winters. The beach on the ocean side is a mile-long stretch of public beach that is enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors annually. It is a perfect place to look for shells or di for a hermit crab. There is a small boardwalk overlooking the ocean and is a great place for a morning stroll to watch the sunrise. The bay side has public docks, private marinas, and numerous parks along the bay, like Dover Township Bay Park. Just take a walk down Bay Boulevard to enjoy the salty breeze blowing off the water. In the cooler evenings, stop in for some arcade games, mini-golf or a bite to eat at Barnacle Bill’s Arcade on Route 35 North. Sunny Honey is perfect for breakfast before hitting the beach. There are many different local restaurants and cafes to stop on along Route 35.
As fall blows in and summer leaves the Jersey Shore until next season, we are occasionally hit with a tropical storm or hurricane. When Hurricane or Superstorm Sandy's hit Ortley Beach at the end of October 2012, our town became known as 'ground zero'. Of the 2,600 homes in Ortley, only 60 escaped damaged that night and about 200 were completely washed away. Cars and boats flipped over and people’s belongings floating out to sea. Joey Harrison’s Surf Club was an icon for years on the beach but was almost completely washed away by Sandy. As much as the town was prepared, we still suffered widespread devastation from the storm.
