Manchester is a little under area of 83 square miles and even though we are small in size, we have some interesting places and legends here. One place to note is the old Brooksbrae Brick Factory that is now a massive graffiti art wonderland in the Pine Barrens. Getting there can be difficult but is unique when you arrive. Our local neighborhood monster or urban legend, the Jersey Devil of the Pine Barrens, is described as an animal characteristics: hooves, fur, horns, tail. It sometimes is described as having wings and goat-like features with glowing red eyes but still resembles a human some believe to be six feet tall, others think it's only three or four feet tall. At night it comes out to scare anyone it meets. The town's old hardware store from the 1950s, had a dog and after it died they had him stuffed. Stuffy is his name for the obvious reason and he is a Dachshund with boots on his little paws. You can stop by to visit him at the currently at the Lakehurst Historical Museum.
We also have beautiful parks and lakes, such as Tuskegee Airmen Park, Pine Lake Park, Grand Army Memorial Park and Crystal Lake/Heritage Minerals. This lake is a beautiful blue but is on private property of a former mining site. During its years of operation, the land was mined so deeply that numerous bodies of water often referred to as ‘lakes’ formed. These ‘lakes’ are actually groundwater aquifers.
We do get an array of storms here. In the spring we get thunderstorms, followed by a few tropical storms and hurricanes in the summer and fall followed by snow storms and blizzards in the winter. I had a pretty big issue with a flood in my bathroom, bedroom and a few smaller rooms. Roland Miller and his partner Jim did a great job educating me on the process and then performing the required cleanup They put my mind at ease (as much as possible) given the circumstances. We had a sizable amount of water damage due to a problem with our refrigerator. We notified SERVPRO of Jackson/Lacey on a Wednesday afternoon, and the crew arrived promptly the next morning. Roland and Marvey were wonderful as were the rest of the team. All work to be done was explained clearly and thoroughly. Everyone took the utmost care when moving our furniture and packing contents of the drawers. They made a stressful situation more tolerable.
