Bordentown Township was created in 1852 by an act of the NJ State Legislature. As the township was being created, the local residents were reaching out to a young woman to establish a free school for the children of the area. Clarissa Harlow Barton, better known as Clara Barton, was asked to start a school in 1852. The humble school began with just 6 students in a small red brick building. Quickly the residents embraced the educational opportunity and in just one year the enrollment grew to 600 students and a new 8 room school was built. However, with the new size and enrollment, founding fathers felt it was best run by a new male principal, leaving Clara without a role.
Bordentown Township’s loss was our country’s gain. Clara Barton went on to be one of the first women employed by the Federal Government and to later establish the American Red Cross. At the onset of the Civil War, she gathered and delivered supplies to Union Soldiers. Known to many soldiers in the Civil War as the “Angel of the Battlefield” she began nursing any fallen soldier, Union or Confederate. She was passionate about helping people in times of conflict and disasters, “You must never think of anything except the need and how to meet it.”
