Nestled in the heart of the Upper Valley, the town of Enfield was settled in 1761 by migrants from a Connecticut town of the same name. Those living there will tell you that Enfield is a peaceful, uneventful place to live, and they may be surprised to learn that it wasn’t always this way. In fact, even the town's name was at one point changed to Relhan in 1766, named so after British Doctor Anthony Relhan. This was because of conflicting charters that contradicted each other's claim to the town. The two sides fought a war of words for years, until finally the name was reversed in 1784 (Following the American Revolution).
Just off Mascoma Lake you will find Enfield Shaker Village. This hamlet has traded hands from a religious community of Shakers to the La Salette Brotherhood and finally became established as a Museum in 1986.
