Fargo’s founding year goes back to 1871, when settlers went to find the point where the Northern Pacific Railway would cross the Red River. The city was actually named after William Fargo, director of the Northern Pacific Railroad and co-founder of Wells Fargo Express Company. In the beginning of the town’s existence, it was a very rowdy town with saloons and bordellos. In 1893, a fire struck the town and burned down much of their Front Street (today’s Main Street in the Downtown Area). However, the community joined together and in less than a year, 246 new buildings were put up in Fargo.
Today, Fargo has a population of 123,550, according to the 2020 census. The city has been booming and continues to grow with a very tight knit community. Fargo has so many great things to offer including art centers, restaurants, cafes, bars and more entertainment. It is no wonder why the city continues to grow.
Some of the main attractions of Fargo include Plains Art Museum, Red River Zoo, Drekker Brewery, Fargo Air Museum or catch an event at the Fargodome. The Fargodome is where the NDSU Bison team plays. If you are in the area for a game, it is a must-do experience. Tailgating outside of the Fargodome and supporting the Bison is popular amongst many Fargo residents.
