In 1873, a Northern Pacific Railway worker named Mike Smith was set off to plant willow and cottonwood trees along the railway to block wind. The location where Smith was sent to plant trees became the city of Casselton. With its first residents being Mike Smith and Emil Priewe and Emil’s wife. The couple had the first child born in the town of Casselton. The town was originally called Casstown, after railroad president, George Cass. In 1876, it was renamed to Casselton.
Today, according to the 2020 census, Casselton has a population of 2,738. The city is located just twenty five miles west of Fargo, North Dakota. Making it a great location being a short drive to the city. Casselton has a strong farming community and has a lot to offer for a small town.
When visiting, you need to check out the two wineries located in the town. Both Maple River Winery and 4e Winery have fantastic award winning wines to offer. The town is also home to the Tharaldson Ethanol plant, which is a large ethanol plant that provides jobs for many members of the community. With the many farms surrounding the town of Casselton, it makes for a great location for the plant.
