Bessemer City is a small Suburban city in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,592 at the 2010 census. The city is approximately 6 miles northwest of Gastonia and 19 miles north of Shelby. Settled in 1756 and founded in 1893, the city's motto is City with a Heart.

Bessemer City is named for Sir Henry Bessemer who created the Bessemer process for smelting iron. Bessemer City was founded on land purchased from the Ormand family, near the Sloan-Washington-Ormand Iron Furnace, but the Bessemer Process made Bessemer City's early iron smelting industry obsolete. The Bright Star restaurant is a local legend, having hosted a string of celebrities from Bear Bryant and Nick Saban to several Alabama governors. It first opened in 1907 at a different location, and moved to the Realty Building after its construction.
