Situated just 30 minutes North of Springfield is the town of Walnut Grove. Walnut Grove was incorporated into a township in 1866, named for the grove of wild black walnut trees growing near the original site of the town. The biggest factor of the early growth was the coming of the Frisco Railroad lines, this made farming profitable and opened trade and connections opened many possibilities for the town. Still today the history of the Frisco Railroad is an important part of this community. The Frisco Highlight Trail is a scenic trail that winds 35 miles through the Ozarks connecting Bolivar to Springfield and goes right Walnut Grove. The trail was designated a National Recreation Trail by the National Parks Service in 2004.
